Handmade Casement Windows

Doors & Hardware

Older in design than the sash window the wooden casement is a side or top hinged/opening window originating in the Tudor period. As the box sash window started to dominate period facades casements were confined to provincial cottages though found a place where Victorian and Georgian window apertures were particularly small. Casements are probably the most common window worldwide and in the UK dominated housing stock from the late 1930’s.
Modern handles and stays are now available though you might remember the old iron ‘pig-tail’ handles that were used in the period. For some inspiration take a look at our selected window furniture here.
As can be seen from the images the glazing detail varies and with or without coloured (picture) glass a traditional wooden casement window is quite a beautiful item. A wood with minimal movement in service is required if warpage is to be avoided. We use the same stable woods for our casement windows as we do for our doors and all are hand
made in the traditional way in our joinery in South London. We’ve selected our casement hardware from the best British and Italian manufacturers and these are available in a wide choice of metallic finishes from antique brass to satin chrome for a more contemporary feel.
