Handmade Bespoke Timber Casement Windows in London & Kent

Timber Casement Windows

Older in design than the sash window, timber casement windows have a side or top hinged/opening window that originated in the Tudor period. As the box sash window started to dominate period town-house facades casements were confined to rear elevations such as kitchens where Victorian and Georgian window apertures were particularly small.

Casements are probably the most common window worldwide and in the UK dominated housing stock from the late 1930s. Casement Windows can be elaborate, charming, whilst also bright simple and functional.

Modern handles and stays are now available though you might remember the old iron ‘pig-tail’ handles that were used in the period.

The glazing detail varies and with or without stained (picture) glass, a traditional wooden casement window is quite a beautiful item. A wood with minimal movement in service is required if warpage is to be avoided.

We use the same stable woods for our casement windows as we do for our doors and all are hand made in the traditional way in our joinery in South London.
